An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

    Interview: Jan 25th, 2005

    Week 4 Question

In New Spring you mentioned that the Blue Ajah taught Moraine and Siuan secret weaves upon their raising. Do other Ajahs have secret weaves, and if so, what are they? Could you share a few of them with us?

    Robert Jordan

Yes, other Ajahs also have secret weaves, though a few of those secrets are actually known to more than one Ajah, each of which believes that it alone knows. That's always the problem with secrets, isn't it? You can never really be sure that somebody else doesn't know too. I could share, but if I told you, then I'd have to kill you. I may yet use one or more Ajah secret weaves in the books, so I'm afraid the answer here is RAFO.

    Interview: Oct 9th, 1996

    Question

Is Moiraine's eyes-and-ears network independent of the Blue or does it overlap? How do they report?—i.e. does Moraine have someone who collects messages for her?

    Robert Jordan

All eyes-and-ears networks overlap a little, but hers was pretty independent.

    Interview: Oct 24th, 1998

    Drew Gillmore

The popular "are you sure we should be able to figure out who killed Asmodean" question used up my second trip through the line. Next time through I asked about the chronology of Eharon and Shiota, since Bashere describes statues from Eharon as being much older than the Shiotan statue put on the cover. We know Deane was born in the village of Salidar in Eharon (Glossary from Lord of Chaos, IIRC), yet part of Bashere's lecture mentioned that Shiota also was pre-Hawkwing.

    Robert Jordan

It turns out there is a textual inconsistency here. RJ couldn't remember which comes first (apparently historical details aren't as engrossing for him as for me), but one was part of the Ten Nations, and the other covered the same area (Illian + Altara) between the Trolloc Wars and Hawkwing. He said the Guide has the correct order, though since I don't have the Guide I don't know what that order is. A minor error, really; either that statue was from Eharon and Bashere mentioned much older Shiotan statues, or Deane was Shiotan and the statues were as written.

    Footnote

This glossary entry was corrected in later editions.

    Interview: Jan 7th, 2003

    Question

In The Dragon Reborn, how did the other sisters find Moraine in the Mountains of Mist?

    Robert Jordan

She’d been putting out feelers. All she had to do in this case was make the first contact herself with an agent of her Ajah, and word would begin to spread. Things are already winding down, so she became a focal point. You might say that the communication networks realigned themselves.

    Interview: Feb 26th, 2003

    tarvalon.net Q&A (Verbatim)

    Question

Would you be willing to tell me what the titles are for the Heads of the Blue and Brown Ajahs?

    Robert Jordan

Nah. I used to tell people stuff like that casually, but lately I think that it's better just to read these things as they are mentioned in the books.

    Interview: Sep 3rd, 2005

    Question

Who was the third Blue Ajah Sitter who didn't make it to Salidar? What became of her?

    Robert Jordan

Well, she died. She was one of the ones who was killed after Siuan was deposed and everything went to hell in a handbasket inside the Tower.

    Interview: Jan 10th, 2011

    tamyrlink ()

Who is the First Selector of the Blue Ajah? (and if that gets RAFO'd) Have we seen her on screen or her name mentioned?

    Brandon Sanderson ()

The glossary in the back of Towers of Midnight says, "The First Selector is currently unknown, although it is suspected that Lelaine Akashi fills this position." That suspicion is correct.

    Interview: Jan 10th, 2011

    FSS ()

I have an older question that I've been meaning to ask for a while.

When the books say that the Blue Ajah throw themselves into Causes, does this mean the Ajah as a whole picks a Cause, or the individual members pick their own causes?

    Brandon Sanderson ()

Individual members pick their own causes.

    Terez

Do you know the name of the third Blue Sitter that died (in Elaida's coup)?

    Maria Simons

I have it somewhere in my computer—I am almost positive—but I can never remember it.

    Interview: Apr 20th, 2013

    Terez

Who led the Blue Ajah before the split? Do you know?

    Maria Simons

    I did. I can't remember.

    Terez

    It's not Lelaine?

    Maria Simons

    I'm not sure.
